Jade

Rigoletto

What it’s about:  Verdi’s Rigoletto is the tragic story of a court jester whose attempts to shield his daughter, Gilda, from the cruelty and corruption of the world leads to devastating consequences. This “thrilling new production” (The Times ★★★★) brings Verdi’s 19th-century tale tastefully into the 21st century. Set against the backdrop of the cold, corporate world ruled by power and cruelty, director Oliver Mears dives into the psychological darkness lying at the heart of this gripping story.

Simon Lima Holdsworth’s bold sets capture a slick corporate dystopia with notes of baroque indulgence. The towering structures and oppressive office spaces transport you to the confining world of Rigoletto’s torment. Carlos Álvarez delivers a powerhouse performance as Rigoletto and soprano Lisette Oropesa’s radiant voice was made for Gilda. This is a must-see production of Verdi’s classic.

Why Jade loves it: ”This is one I was dying to see live, but I didn’t manage to get tickets when it was on at The Royal Opera House. The staging for this production is gorgeous, the opening vignette is like a living baroque painting, and I am a huge fan of Lisette Oropesa. I’ve rewatched her Caro nome over and over – stunning.”

Dan

Edward Scissorhands (Dance Version)

What it’s about:  Whatever choreographer Matthew Bourne touches is pure gold, and this playful dance interpretation based on Tim Burton’s 1990s film is no exception. Edward Scissorhands follows the story of Edward, a kind-hearted soul with scissors for hands, as he struggles to find his place in a world that fears his… unusual appearance.

Matthew Bourne brings Edward’s story to life through memorable vignettes, hilarious antics, and brilliant choreography. With a cast packed full of quirky characters, dancing topiaries, and nosey neighbors, this production is another cult classic in the making. Dancer Liam Mower’s performance as the sensitive and misunderstood Edward has you rooting for him from the start, and Ashley Shaw shines as Kim Boggs, the girl who sees Edward for who he really is. Filmed live at the Wles Millennium Centre in Cardiff, this magical and moving production will carve its way into your heart.

Why Dan Loves it:  This dance version not only captures the essence of the original film, but it brings a new depth and dimension to the story. It’s a beautiful and edgy dance film to watch during the holidays!”
